Breakfast was at 8am, as usual lovely fresh fruit and eggs in various forms.
We met at 8.50 so that we could all walk together to the adjacent Church ( CofU). The service was in English and was very friendly, Paul was asked by the reverend to come and introduce our party so that we visitors could be welcomed.
After church we spent a little while chatting to some of the local people before heading back to the hotel to change, as our plan was to go to the new Global Care centre and do some painting.
The guest house provided us with a picnic lunch and by 11am we were on our way to the centre, all of us dressed ready to paint, and get paint on ourselves.
The 14 of us split up into 2s and 3s and distributed ourselves around the centre to paint the walls a nice “Soft White” colour. It did not take long for the rooms to start being transformed as more and more paint was applied covering the dark grey plaster. The sunlight was soon bouncing of the newly painted walls, brightening the rooms.
All this work was helped along by the ‘Ufactor 2010 Choir’ providing an endless stream of songs and entertainment, much appreciated by the local people who would stop and listen as they walked up and down the road. A highlight was obviously “There is a hole in my Bucket” because half way through the ‘choir’ dissolved into uncontrollable laughter. We have yet to find out what happened to cause such mirth.
We stopped for our picnic lunch, arranged with the guest house by Cath, a sumptuous feast after about 3 hours painting. The meal was just finishing when a huge cheer went up from the ladies in the group, “Rachel’s been’. This trip is being filled with mysteries!!
We managed to paint the walls on all the rooms in the new centre, most of them with two coats and by 5pm we were ‘whacked’ so time to pack up and head home. By now huge black clouds were moving in our direction very quickly and we just managed to get on the bus as a downpour engulfed us, the red earth road turned to slippery mud in seconds. Our driver had to turn the bus around in the very narrow lane and the rain and the mud caused him to slip a back wheel into a ditch. OOPS!!! So everyone on the bus had to get off and help get the bus free, which they eventually did by use of bricks jammed under the wheels to provide some grip. The consequence of this was that everybody was soaked to the skin. The rest of the trip was uneventful and everyone was pleased to see the guest house and the chance to get into warm dry clothes.
The evening meal was our usual chatty and noisy affair, exchanging stories and experiences, however the one unanswered question from the evening was “How did Barbara get paint on her underwear?” Answers to Barbara please…..
Tomorrow we would continue work on the building but others would be off doing home and school visits.
We went to bed feeling that we had achieved something very positive.
