Dr Tom & Barbara’s thoughts – 26th October

Went to bed with thoughts jumbled after an evening spent with Gertrude. Thinking about babies and young children being brought into prisons, sharing their mothers’ food. Children abused by step mothers, even to death; corruption in so many public services; desperately ill people brought to hospitals, then too poor to pay for tests or treatment.

On the flip side there is this amazing inspirational woman with love and compassion for the children a woman who will go to extraordinary lengths to bring some relief, including preaching the gospel to the women prisoners..

Then this morning we went to Guiding Star School where we had a fantastic welcome and were prayed for and sung to. It was humbling to know how much they appreciated us being there. Rachel told the story of Samuel being called by God and the theme of listening to God was picked up by the teachers.

We had time with the children, singing and sharing rhymes. They all wanted to touch our white skins.

The children were happy and open, interested and interesting. They all had shoes, unlike the last school, and classrooms with lots of visual aids. But at lunctime there wasn’t evidence of much food and lots of the uniforms were torn.

Gertrude gave us fruit and asked us to encourage and pray for the children in P7. That was a brilliant experience, praying for them the week before their public exams. Then a young girl prayed for us, we were amazed by the confidence and authority she had when she prayed and blessed as she prayed for our safety and for God to be our driver.

When we were ready to leave we discovered the bus had a mechanical problem with the steering, it was finally fixed and we were off to Soroti.

It was exciting setting off, back to see out Soroti friends. We did not get far, we had to wait for Gertrude, not far again and we broke down. 2 hours later we are still waiting for a mechanic.

P.S. Had breakfast today with Steve Asubu, that was great, to catch up with what he has been upto was excellent – brought back lots of memories.
